Google is partnering with Cathay Pacific to test an AI-powered contrail mitigation technology in Asia-Pacific, contributing data to global contrail research and understanding contrail formation in the region.
Contrails are the white streaks that form behind aircraft in cold, humid air and can persist to influence atmospheric warming.
HOW THE SYSTEM WORKS
The technology combines AI predictions, satellite imagery, and weather intelligence to identify contrail-forming zones in advance. Dispatchers and pilots plan slight altitude shifts, which are then communicated to the cockpit via Cathay Pacific’s inflight Wi‑Fi and Electronic Flight Folder (EFF) without disrupting standard operations. EARLY RESULTS AND SCALE OF THE TRIALS
Initial trials included more than 80 flights with roughly 40% estimated reduction in contrail warming when pilots followed contrail-avoidance routes.
A broader operational trial targeted over 100 flights across Cathay Pacific’s network, with more than 80 following contrail-avoidance routes and a similar ~40% estimated reduction in contrail warming.
The Hong Kong–Singapore corridor was among the routes tested, and interventions on this single route accounted for more than half of the trial’s total emissions reductions.
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT AND BROADER RESEARCH GOALS
The program is expanding into a larger second phase and partnering with Contrails.org, a nonprofit focused on contrail science. The trials aim to build broader understanding of how contrail avoidance could work across Asia and transpacific routes and contribute to global contrails research.
Contrail mitigation is described as an immediately available, scalable option that can be pursued with today’s aircraft and fuel, and the collaboration seeks to accelerate progress in contrail science.
