Google states that its blueprint includes an initial agreement for extending the life and uprating a nuclear plant in Finland, with Fortum as a partner. The Loviisa plant, which currently supports a portion of Finland’s energy needs and employs hundreds of people, would be kept online through 2050 under the program and may undergo expansion through upgrades.
The arrangement is presented as part of broader efforts to keep a stable, affordable electricity supply for households, businesses, and industrial users.
EXPANDING THE CLEAN ENERGY MIX: WIND, STORAGE, AND PPAS
Google describes plans to add renewable capacity in Finland, including two onshore wind projects contracted with Valorem and Suomen Hyötytuuli, bringing total newly contracted wind energy to 629 MW. A 94 MW battery system near Google’s Kajaani site is planned to support grid balancing and reduce price volatility, with operations expected to commence in late 2027.

To minimize grid constraints, Google says its approach includes siting data centers where they can best support the Finnish grid, and expanding investment in the country’s clean energy supply.
The company worked with Fingrid, Business Finland, and local municipalities to identify locations in northern and central Finland with existing grid infrastructure and carbon-free energy.
A STUDY ON SITING AND POTENTIAL SAVINGS FOR FINNISH CONSUMERS
Google commissioned modeling that compared a hypothetical 1 GW increase in energy demand in the Oulu–Kajaani region versus southern Finland, finding that smart siting could yield substantial savings for energy consumers over 20 years.
COMMUNITY AND ECONOMIC RESILIENCE THROUGH PARTNERSHIPS
The plan includes partnerships to ensure energy affordability and resilience in communities around Hamina, Kajaani, Muhos, and Vaala, with funds directed to programs such as solar panels on municipal housing, batteries and heat pumps at public facilities, and lighting projects.
